On the one hand, these may indicate heavily loaded, but healthy legs, on the other hand, they may also be a sign of a disease such as a venous insufficiency. In Germany, about 22 million people suffer from venous insufficiency, particularly at risk are obese people and people who drink too little and exercise too little. In addition, heavy legs can also cause problems after jogging or during pregnancy. But what helps? Heavy legs due to venous insufficiency
Anyone who suffers from tired, heavy legs rarely thinks that a venous disease could be the cause. Several million people in Germany are struggling with smaller or larger vein problems. When the venous valves do not close anymore
A venous insufficiency has many causes, hereditary factors play just as much a role as too little exercise or unhealthy habits. In venous insufficiency, the blood vessels are dilated, which means that the venous valves do not close properly. In healthy veins, they prevent blood from returning to the legs.
However, if the venous valves do not close properly, the blood flows back. This can lead to a further expansion of the veins. Over time, the increased venous blood pressure causes gaps from which fluid can escape and edema forms. If not treated, it may come at a later stage to the so-called open legs.
Heavy legs due to venous insufficiency: what to do?
If tired, heavy legs are due to a venous disease, you should avoid standing and sitting for a long time. Instead, you should raise your aching legs as often as possible. Also, changing showers can help alleviate the pain.
In addition, the vessels can also be strengthened by a special venous gymnastics. Through gymnastics, the blood vessels remain elastic and the venous valves close better again. Venous gymnastics can also facilitate the return of blood to the heart. As the muscles in the calves and thighs press against the vessels during venous gymnastics, they are compressed and the blood is delivered to the heart.
Prevent heavy legs
If you have a lot of spider veins or even varicose veins, you should definitely seek medical treatment. Your doctor may also prescribe compression stockings to help you prevent heavy legs. These support the venous function by exerting pressure on the veins from the outside. The enlarged veins are thus significantly reduced in diameter and the venous valves can close better again. Compression stockings also ensure that no liquid escapes into the fabric.
