Alcohol and diabetes

Anyone who celebrates a festival will also like to drink a glass of wine, beer or champagne. In exuberance, however, it may happen that one or the other drinks too much. Diabetics must be even more careful when drinking alcohol and should follow some rules of behavior. Alcohol is a poison for the body. Therefore, the alcohol is first degraded, even before glucose is released from the storage form in the liver into the blood. As a result, not enough sugar enters the blood, the blood sugar drops.

Diabetics and alcohol consumption

Take special care of all diabetics who are being treated with insulin or the so-called insulinotropic drugs. Do not substitute alcohol for a meal. On the contrary: drink alcohol if only to a carbohydrate-containing snack. The drop in blood sugar levels can also occur up to 12 hours later - hypoglycaemia in the second half of the night or even the following morning is therefore possible.

Measure the blood sugar again before falling asleep: this should not be less than 180 mg / dl. If the values ​​are too low, eat one to two BEs at bedtime! Check blood sugar more often the day after drinking alcohol. Anyone who moves with exuberance must know that physical exertion makes the cells of the body more sensitive to insulin - the blood sugar drops off. The increased insulin sensitivity lasts for several hours. Do not drink alcoholic beverages before or after exercise

  • There is nothing wrong with a diabetic for a glass of wine or beer. Here, the "2 glasses rule" has proven: Men should drink no more than 2 glasses (0.2 liters) of beer or 2 glasses (0.1 liters) of wine or 2 glasses (2 centiliters) of schnapps. Women should drink only half because of their more sensitive liver.
  • Some drinks such as liqueurs, sweet fruit wines, port or non-alcoholic beer are high in sugars and cause blood sugar to rise rapidly. Such drinks should be avoided if possible. Suitable drinks are, for example, diabetic wines, dry wines, light beer, brandies.
  • Never drink alcoholic beverages on an empty stomach, because an empty stomach leads to an immediate absorption of the alcohol into the blood.
  • Bear in mind when drinking alcohol - alcohol has many calories. One gram of alcohol contains 7 kcal! So if you pay attention to its weight, you must take this point into account.
